My take on the coffeemaker: gratuitously mechanical, environmentally friendly, unnecessarily precise -- and it makes great coffee.
In this project I used an Arduino, made precise sheet metal parts, reverse-engineered a brushless DC motor drive, dissected a hobby servo, learned about PID controllers, soldered stainless and galvanized steels, and did a little bit of not-strictly-needed FEA.
